Sometimes writing about a certain given subject isn’t so easy. Everything seems to all to often, lead into another thing without so much more is a random thought entering my brain. Lets take for instance the thought of fishing related magazine articles; there sure is allot to choose from.

Just yesterday, I ran across two magazines with interesting reading worth mentioning. I’m sure there is plenty other great things I missed elsewhere but, these two articles are our focus today. One thing is for sure; when I page through a magazine and find reference to or an article about a bait I use, I’m ecstatic about it. In-Fisherman and Bassin’ both had great issues this month and the two articles that were great to see in print.

Feb. 2009 In-Fisherman article by Gord Pyzer. Giant Gators Galore! page 53

Seeing the Scrounger get referenced to in this article was great. It’s just more proof the Scrounger works, this I have known and talked about for two years now. If the Scrounger can produce so well for Gord Pyzer for these giant Pike on his trip to Kesagami Lake, imagine what it could do in your hands. Gord has aslo supplied photos of big lake trout caught using the Scrounger months before through the wintertime ice.

The Scrounger Jig makes swimbaits extra special. The action of the jig alone is enough but, when you add your favorite swimbait, it’s magic in the making. These giants and this article are just scratching the surface of what this lure can do.

Quite a few guides report increased crappie and Striper using the scrounger jig. I personally have used a scrounger and caught Lm/Sm bass, crappie, pickerel, perch and sunfish and have seen pictures of catfish caught using scroungers. They even work for saltwater species of fish. Add your plastic bait and go fish it once, the most interchangeable, universal or versatile jighead on the market by far. The bait can be what ever you make it; skirts, hair and any kind of plastic can be added as a trailer to build a bait that works for you, for any species of fish.

What kind of fish do you catch using a Scrounger?

Feb. 2009 Bassin’ Special Issue “Bass Baits”. 50 Best New Baits page 21

The article references 50 new baits to be on the lookout for this year. There sure is some great new baits listed in this article and I respect their opinion but, I can think of a few other lures that could have been mentioned or substituted. There is only one product listed that I currently use and I only see a handful of lures that look to be a significant improvement over something already available to anglers. The one product listed that stands out for me is the Ragetail Anaconda.

The Rage Tail Anaconda was released last fall and to describe it in a few words, One Excellent Worm! The Anaconda in either a 7″ & 10″ length is available in enough colors to trigger that bite on a lake near you. The Rage Tail lineup of baits by Strikeking has changed things across the board for plastic baits, and the Anaconda is just one of them. Be sure to give them a look, the Rage Tail lineup may have just what your looking for.

Do any of the baits listed in the article make a difference to you? Do you think they missed something?

2008 has been a great year for terminal tackle advancement and innovation. While I haven’t fished with every new product out there, I have been bass fishing with a few things that I really like. I personally don’t jump into all the hype of a product unless that fishing product can save me money in the long run or catch more fish. My line-up of terminal tackle is much the same as last year with the exception of a couple additions to my tackle arsenal.

I wrote about “The Stand Up Jig” released in 2008 by Parasite Weights before the fishing season really kicked in. Now, 9 months later, the stand up jig head has proved that it does when others won’t. When I hear or see the term “stand up jig”; I think about all the jigs I have tried in the past that seem to fall over more often than not. That is far from the case when bass fishing with the Parasite Stand Up Jig. I admit, this jig isn’t the same old thing to rig but, once it is rigged, this jig will stand, bounce and stand again and again, each time keeping that hook point in the strike zone. If your looking for a dependable stand up jig for finesse fishing, this jig is worth the look. The cost of these stand up jigs is comparable to other jigs but, the increased effectiveness and hook up ratio is well above other products I have tried.

The “Cradle Weight” also released by Parasite Weights this year is designed for use with swimbaits. It allows bass anglers to use an offset hook of their choice, get a well balanced rig that runs true. Best part of this system is that your swimbait will never slide down the hook into a ball as the bait gets worn from use. Each swimbait can be fished longer, fished harder without the need periodically fix it which means a huge savings to the bass angler. The cradle weight is available from 1/8th to 1/2oz offering bass anglers lots of options for fishing their swimbaits from; burning it across the shallows to bouncing it across the deeper holes. If you like to fish swimbaits, this may just be what you are looking for.

Also from Parasite Weights are some unique products I use on a regular basis that each save me money every trip to the lake.

The Parasite Clips and weights are worth their weight in gold in my opinion. When I fish a soft plastic weightless, I don’t need glue, I use a Parasite Clip. The clip keeps my bait in place on the hook and allows me to cast repeatedly without the need to fix a bait. The clip also allows me to catch more fish per bait and continue to fish with a seemingly worn out piece of soft plastic. I have saved a ton on soft plastics over the last two years using this product. Simple to rig and worth every penny to those that use them. The clips are great for senkos, flukes, topwater frogs and even while Carolina rigging a lizard.

The Parasite weights have all the same great benifits as the clip but, have weight added to them. The weights make for fast and easy weight pegging and you never need to check or fix a rig. Available in plain lead or painted to 1oz and 3/16 & 1/4oz tungsten sizes. This weight system is not a gimmick, they do just what they claim and will save anglers time wasted and money each time the product is used. Check out the closeup of a tungsten weight rigged to the left, when this weight is rigged, it is vertually imposible for your bait to slide down the hook into a ball. Also, the clip part of the weight keeps the weight securely against the tip of your bait making for a no-hassle pegging method. These weights are very easy to rig and have become something I use on a regular basis. For more information on any of the Parasite Weights line of products, checkout their website: http://parasiteweights.com/

The “J” Hook by Owner is by far the most dependable offset hook I have found. These may cost a little more than other hooks and aren’t available in bulk packs but, I know when I’m using the “j” hook, I can stick a fish. I haven’t bent one of these yet and this is the only hook I have found that will penetrate fish bone or hard areas of the jaw without bending a point or getting dull. These can be set into rocks and other bottom structures and still maintain a sharp point. If you haven’t tried Owner hooks yet, find your style of hook by them and be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Owner product line.

The Scrounger Jig might be better being talked about as a lure but, because it is a unique jig head, I’ll just talk about it now. The Scrounger is in my opinion, one of the most versitile jig heads on the market for anglers. It’s uses are for more than just bass; a scrounger can be used for any panfish, perch, LM bass, SM bass, pike, pickerel, musky, walleye, catfish, striper as well as many saltwater species. It’s unique design allows the fisherman to add a wobble action to any soft plastic used as a trailer. Scroungers can also be tied with hair to become a hair jig or even be used with a skirt much like a spinnerbait. If you are looking for one lure that you can target just about any fish species, this has to be one of them. They are available in a multitude of weights and sizes. You can find out more about the Scrounger at: http://thescrounger.com

Best Soft Plastics Bass Baits 2008

2008 has been a great year for new soft plastics for bass fisherman. It seems that every where we turn or search, there is a new soft plastic bait for bass that gets our attention. So many baits to choose from and so little time to use them, which do we try?

With the selection of so many soft plastics on the market these days, it pays to find a few companies with products we can each depend on. I have found that I only need a few different products to catch fish on a semi-regular basis even though, the “baitmonkey” is always lurking on my shoulder waiting for something new to appear. I took a little time to reflect on this past year and put together a list of the soft plastics I used this year for LM & SM Bass that really hit the spot, caught plenty of fish and basically did what they are supposed to do, CATCH FISH! The products listed below are in no particular order; each of them works equally well under advertised applications and deserve consideration in my list. When I head out fishing; you will always find a selection of the baits below in my back pack.

Case Plastics: www.caseplastics.com

Case Plastics has an amazing amount of soft plastic baits to choose from that are affordable, durable and catch both smallmouth and largemouth bass. The Case Magic Stick, Jacks Worm & my wife’s favorite the Hellgrammite have landed more than their share of fish this year. Each of these baits will land LM and SM bass on a regular basis and save you plenty of funds for your next outing with the baitmonkey.
JDC Baits: www.jdcbaits.com

JDC Baits offers bass anglers a great selection of affordable and durable soft plastics also. The JDC line up of soft plastics are very unique in that most will only be found under the JDC name. The RockCraw is one of the most realistic craws on the market for bass and responsible for most of my early season LM Bass. It is available in multiple sizes, casts like a bullet and flat-out catches fish. JDC Baits “Creek Chub” is a simple bait that worked extremely well for me this season for smallmouth when rigged on a jig head. This same bait will make a great drop shot bait for those that like drop shotting. JDC’s most recent release is the BLR Bomber; a 10″ soft plastic “senko” type bait which I just love throwing. The BLR Bomber landed my new personal best LM bass this season and always seems to get a bigger bass in my hands. Let us not forget the JDC Skip n Pop, the only soft plastic topwater popper that I know of. The ability to fish a T/Rigged popper through pads without hanging up with a load of treble hooks is something many of us are just not accustomed too, and it’s great! Each of these baits landed plenty of fish this season and have become a staple in my ever growing selection of soft plastic tackle. I never leave home without a selection of these JDC Baits products.

Rage Tail Baits: www.ragetail.com

What more can I say, this company took me buy surprise! Every one of their patented Rage Tail baits are unique and has landed loads of fish for my wife and I. The patented tail design has a way about it that just plain works and works well. The rage shad, rage toad, rage craw and rage chunk were my first exploration with this companies baits and each falls into the “amazing” category for me. The Rage Tail line of soft plastics have re-defined action, vibration and the movement with each of their soft plastic baits. The topwater fun to be had with the rage tail shad and toad can’t be duplicated and far exceeds my origianl expectations. The rage chunk is a great jig trailer and also makes a great finesse bait when rigged on a jighead while the craw steps it up on a T/rig. With the recent release of the all new Rage Tail Anaconda (7″ & 10″ worm), Rage Lobster (6″ craw), Rage Lizard and the Rage Spacemonkey (creature bait), the ragetail lineup of baits almost seems complete. We have been lucky enough to aquire many of these new baits and have great luck with them over the last couple months. Rage Tail baits are a steady producer and will always have a place in my pack on every outing to fish.

Reaction Strike Swimbaits: www.reactionstrike.com

I had to jump on this band wagon this year and see what the swimbait craze is all about. Finding a paddletail swimbait these days isn’t very hard. Finding just the right swimbait in the size and color your after is a different story. A friend suggested Reaction Strike swimbaits to me and let me tell you, they have just what I was looking for. Reaction Strike has plenty of colors and sizes to suit all the paddletail applications I have considered. This is still a new area of soft plastic exploration for me but, if you look in my bag, you will find a decent selection of these baits for when the need arises.

ESPN released news that co-anglers will be removed from the Elite Series tournaments in 2009. Get one anglers view about this decision and add your comment.

It appears that ESPN has decided to eliminate co-anglers from the Elite Series in 2009 and shatter the dreams many bass fisherman across the country. Just days since the news was released, tension is rising among B.A.S.S. members, co-anglers and visitors to the ESPN Outdoors website. If this is news to you, you can read the ESPN Blog and all the angler comments here: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishing/news/story?id=3492085

I just have to wonder, how many more nails can be put in the coffin of B.A.S.S. before ESPN is done tearing down the “grass roots” values B.A.S.S. was built upon by Ray Scott so long ago. I would imagine even Ray thinks some of these changes are ridiculous at times. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t understand the Elite angler position. Elite Anglers are fishing as a job, they face hurdles everyday out there; they have hopes of cashing a check, earning points and staying in the upper tiers of the bass fishing spot light. Who could blame them, they worked hard to get there and they earned their place as an Elite.

Now I admit, a co-angler can certainly have an impact on an “Elite Anglers” day on the water but, the co-angler is not your competitor. Quite frankly, you’re the “Elite Angler” (in the front of the boat) and if you missed that LM Bass that your co-angler caught, you had your chance, too bad! Things like that happen and that is why it’s called “Fishing”.

In the above ESPN blog, there are quite a few quotes from anglers and manufacturers that I would like to share with my personal opinions below them.

Greg Hackney was quoted as saying, “It’s the greatest thing to ever happen to the sport of bass fishing”

I personally find that really hard to digest when I think about the co-anglers and some of their dreams to maybe rub shoulders with the Elite by fishing as a co-angler some day. Am I to assume he (Greg Hackney) never fished as a co-angler climbing the ranks, I couldn’t really tell you. Does he forget that he was just an angler nobody knew at one time to?

“I certainly understand how the pros feel,” said Eric Naig of Pure Fishing, who has competed as co-angler. “But as a manufacturer it’s a little disappointing, because it’s been a great way for us to grow our pyramid of influence. I do understand, though.”

Not only will co-anglers feel the brunt of this decision but, manufacturers will also suffer from this imo. Most all the tackle companies rely on anglers for promotion, product visibility and education about their products at these tournaments through personal interaction. Let’s face it, without your aspiring bass angler buying their products, where would you and they be. Most of these same co-anglers are the bass fisherman that; cover the cost of your ELITE SPONSORS PAYCHECK, these same anglers are working with children and the public to ensure this great sport for future generations in their hometowns, while you fly or drive around to appear for a commercial or special event that revolves around sales.

“This is our job, though,” said Kevin Short, an Elite Series competitor who has been outspoken in his blogs on ESPNOutdoors.com about the role co-anglers play in the outcome of these events. “None of those guys are showing up trying to make their house payment or take care of their bills. They get to fish, possibly win, and go home. But in the process they can also change the outcome of one of our tournaments and impact a pro’s career.”

This is the one quote that I feel is really insensitive, careless & just plain ridiculous. What color are the clouds where you come from Kevin? Fact is, everyone is fishing in the competition to win, because they are competitive. I would also venture to say that most of the co-anglers face more of a financial burden to fish these tournaments than you and the other Elite Anglers dollar for dollar. Your entry fee might be more but, you have contributing sponsors helping you along. Most of the co-anglers are doing it all out of pocket and I’m sure there has been quite a few that have gone so far as to re-mortgage a house just to fish tournaments at this level and get a chance to fish with you Elite Bass Anglers. Don’t think for a minute that just because your an Elite, that you have it that much worse than the other guy that is supporting your sponsors and paying his own way.

“You’ve got to be careful with what you’re doing here,” said Elite Series angler Peter Thliveros. “Co-anglers are the guys that have perpetuated the myth of a lot of the top guys.

“Their word of mouth is how a lot of this industry was built to this point. Maybe so many of the stories don’t get out the way they used to and it turns into NASCAR where everybody knows you, but they don’t know you.”

Well said Peter! This decision will just add to the list of ways ESPN/Disney is loosing sight of what B.A.S.S. was once made of.

In Closing

As much as I would like to start adding quotes from the responses to this article and comment about them, I will leave that up to you to read and think about.

I would hope that someday soon, the bass fishing public can find out just where each of these ELITE ANGLERS stood concerning this decision. Maybe some of their sponsors should think about what kind of guy they are sponsoring and the possible snow-balling effect may have on them. As for the major B.A.S.S. sponsors, I hope it’s all worth it in the end without a following of anglers. It may be a good time to stock up on FLW Anglers. It is no wonder so many anglers have gone to FLW and I imagine many more will be making the switch soon enough.

If you would like to comment on this decision here, feel free. This is one topic that people should talk about.

Just about a year ago, Strike King introduced the Rage Tail series of soft plastic baits at ICAST 2007. The buzz was on about this new design for sure and now I understand why. The “Rage Tail” design is not your average curly tail, floppy legs or paddles found on most baits these days but rather, a commotion just waiting to happen on the water. The exclusive “Rage” series tail displaces more water than any competitors product for sure. The introduction of a Rage Tail Shad, Rage Tail Craw, Rage Tail Toad and Rage Tail Chunk is a great addition to the Strike King line of products.

Now, almost a year later, my wife and I decided it was time to give the Rage Tail Shad a try. We saw a fishing show about them months ago and they sure caught fish on the show. It sure didn’t take long before fish were exploding on this bait for us but, like most topwater baits, explosions and hookups are two completely different things. It was really enjoyable for me to watch my wife get a taste of a topwater bite which seemed to come easy with the Rage Shad. She explained to me that the Rage Tail Shad had her three favorite qualities wrapped up in one bait, and I quote.

The Rage Tail Shad can be fished weightless. It is very affordable to purchase and most importantly is, this bait is a very durable soft plastic bait capable of catching multiple fish. Mrs.Matstone

In the last three days fishing the Rage Tail Shad, we have had countless fish blow up on it making each day an exciting day at the lake. We caught fish each day we fished with it in various weather conditions. Mrs. M fished the same Rage Shad for two days before a fish decided to eat half of the tail and force her to change it. These baits hold up really well for a soft plastic bait but, this is not your average soft plastic bait either.

The Rage Tail Shad gets my two thumbs up since fishing. I’m now looking forward to trying the others in the “Rage” series of baits. The Rage Tail Chunk should be a great jig trailer and I have no doubts it will displace more water and be a great addition to my tackle arsenal. The Rage Tail Craw should be a great bait to T/Rig and work across the bottom or flip into heavy cover. As for the Rage Tail Toad, I know this frog will make the commotion I look for when frog fishing in slop or lily pads.

You can read more about this great bait at RageTail.com. Rage Tail also has a very informative message board to ask questions or add feedback which can be found here: http://www.ragetail.com/ragetalk/index.php?board=1.0

With the ever increasing amount of fishing pressure anglers face out fishing these days. It’s no wonder many anglers are turning to deep water tactics like the drop shot to catch more and/or bigger fish. Targeting deep water smallmouth bass can have its hurdles but, a little preparation can save the day. Sometimes when anglers catch fish deep and bring them to the top too quickly, those fish may be over inflated or seem bloated. This happens when the fish can’t equalize the pressure in such a short time and its air bladder fills with air, causing the fish to often times go belly up. When this happens, the fish has little chance of survival without direct interaction from us, the anglers.

Until more recently, “Fizzing” was about the only way to help the fish and give it a chance of survival. This consists or using a needle to puncture the fish’s air bladder, releasing that excess air. While this may seem like an easy answer for most, the idea of sticking a fish with a needle has its drawbacks. Without proper knowledge of the procedure; you stand to puncture a vital organ, spread disease or just create another problem. Read more about “Fizzing here: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/columns/story?page=b_col_bt_1106_fizzing_procedure

A few months ago, The Flip Clip was introduced to the angling market. Finally, an easy alterative to fizzing a fish that is much faster and much easier for the average angler. The Flip Clip is something an angler can attach to a fish in distress before adding it to their live well.

What it does: The Flip Clip attaches to the anal fin of the fish forcing the fish to remain in a swimming position and below water level where it can breathe. This also allows the fish a chance to re-acclimate to the pressure and disperse that extra air on its own while in your live well. This is a huge break through for the tournament angler and is clearly the fastest answer to the problem of fizzing. You can read more about this product at: http://www.flipclipfishing.com

If you’re an angler that fishes deep water and runs into the need to fizz a fish, this product is something you should see.

It has been less than two weeks since I first tossed my new BLR Bomber made by JDC Baits. This crazy new soft plastic “senko” type bait is 10″ long and flat out catches fish big and small! My first day out with a bomber was a big success with the exception of a broken rod. (Read More About It Here)

My Second day fishing the Bomber was another successful day with the CPR of one fish and another lost.

My third day out was a life long memory in the making! The combination of a JDC Baits BLR Bomber and Some CB’s Hawg Sauce “shad” gel landed my new personal best largemouth bass after 20 years.
I can only begin to describe just how excited I was to finally best my personal best LM.

Returning to the place where my JB custom bass rod got broken is a moment of stupidity, I searched for the elusive fish which caused me to act in such a way. My Bomber was tattered and torn, it was now 2 inches shorter than it started but, the Parasite Clip kept it in place and allowed me to continue using this huge bait without a problem.

Imagine that, three trips to the water fishing for hours with the same bait. The Parasite Clip can make any bait last longer.

Tossing the Bomber to every hole and point in and around the weedbeds, the “round 1″ search for a big bass was looking very bleak, to say the least. I quickly realized that I never added any CB’s Hawg Sauce gel to mask my smell and up my odds. I quick dig in the bag and the addition of CB’s “Shad” gel and “round 2″ was on. I began working all those points and holes in the weeds again and to my surprise, it took just a few casts and the fight was on. I knew I had something big on the line but, I never dreamed it was to be my new personal best LM Bass. I was holding a 6lb/10oz largemouth bass in my hands after more than 20 years thanks to two great products, the JDC Baits “BLR Bomber” and CB’s Hawg Sauce “Shad Gel“. As you can only imagine, the smile didn’t leave my face for the rest of the night and quickly returns with the thought of my recent catch. I have a couple pictures below to share.

We are almost 1 month into the online bass tournament at the Angling Center. The competition is tight right now while the participants work towards winning one of two custom bass rods up for grabs in the contest. As it stands; the leader is bassrods from Utah with 3 great smallmouth bass towards his limit of 5 fish.
Just 6 points behind him is Terry and redbug both with 110 points. redbug has 3 nice LM Bass and Terry is the first to post a full 5 fish limit. Never fear, there is still more than a month to go in this contest and we allow participants to cull fish to get the best 5 fish limit possible.

You can read more about the contest here and see pictures of the participants catches here.

JDC Baits has recently added the BLR Bomber to their line-up of big bass baits. The BLR Bomber, developed last year by Dave White from Basslurereviews is now available at the JDC Baits website.
This unique soft-plastic senko type 10″ soft stick bait is big, and is made to target big bass but, will catch average bass also.

This bait has a great action when fished texas-rigged, the fall is nice and it can easily double as a soft jerkbait with its “walk the dog” action. For all the Wacky Riggers out there, the BLR Bomber has an amazing wiggle on it’s way to the bottom and will put a meal in front of that big bass you have been targeting.

I got my first order of them yesterday and went to my favorite lake to see them up close and personal. I Texas rigged the bomber with an 11/0 Owner hook and used a large Parasite Clip to keep the bomber from sliding down the hook and threw it on a heavy action rod. If you are gonna texas rig this bait, big hooks, Parasite clips and a heavy action rod is what I suggest. Here is a picture of another average bass I caught yesterday.

JDC Baits offers this great bait in green pumpkin only for now but, with any luck, we will see a few more great fish catching colors in the coming months. For more information and to order some BLR Bombers, please visit:http://www.jdcbaits.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=49&osCsid=6809da239730d74e4b60976c52896f8c
You can order Large Parasite clips here: http://www.parasiteweights.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=28
